The 10 Best Teams Doctor Strange Has Joined In The Comics

Whether Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness proved anything is that the Sorcerer Supreme is one of the most compelling characters in Marvel Comics history. Outside of his mystical abilities, the Good Doctor is also known for his impeccable leadership skills, and he’s put them to good use on many Marvel teams.

From his headlining gig with the Defenders to his shady dealings with the Illuminati organization, Doctor Strange is never too far from many of Marvel’s biggest teams. Although he’s been part of tons of collaborations over the years, only a select few have truly been star-studded teams.

supernatural avengers

Supernatural Avengers, directed by Doctor Strange

The Avengers name has been thrown around a lot in the Marvel Universe, but Avengers of the Supernatural was fitting nomenclature nonetheless. Created when Mojo kidnapped various cults of the Avengers and put them into one of his twisted TV shows, the Avengers of the Supernatural were the nerdy pariahs of his little high school drama.

Even though they were brought together under stupid circumstances, the team was still made up of some of Marvel’s best occult characters. With Strange as their leader, the team was a force to be reckoned with, and they could have fit right in with some of Marvel’s strongest Avengers rosters.

black priests

Black Priest Doctor Strange uses his powers in Marvel Comics.

While most Marvel heroes only deal with one Earth, Doctor Strange’s involvement in the Multiverse has taken his task of heroism to a much higher level. The Dark Priests existed before Doctor Strange got involved, but his leadership skills helped organize them into a cohesive force.

Charged with removing foreign lands from the multiverse, some see the Black Priests as remorseless villains. Strange’s leadership did little to change that impression, and his involvement helped push him further towards anti-hero status. Maintaining the balance of the multiverse is a difficult task, and the all-powerful Dark Priests have frequently proven themselves nigh invincible when fighting those who wish to stop them.

Strange Academy

Imagining himself somewhat like Charles Xavier, Doctor Stephen Strange founded the Strange Academy to help wayward youngsters hone their magical abilities. The diversity of the young group was what made the team powerful, and Doctor Strange’s guidance helped them stay on track.

Although Strange mostly took a back seat to their adventures, it was his leadership that helped make them the heroes they were. The team was strong due to the various powers they possessed, and their youthful spirit was reminiscent of some of X-Men’s top rosters over the years.

New Avengers

While the main Avengers roster has changed over the years, the New Avengers were meant to be an entirely separate team. Coming off the main government-sanctioned roster, the New Avengers usually bent the rules to get things done.

Doctor Strange joined the New Avengers after the Civil war storyline, and although he didn’t stay long, he contributed to the team as a leader. As is usually the case with Strange, he was drawn to the team due to his outward nature, and he was able to apply his own unique morals to his time on the roster.

ultimate knights

Doctor Strange Springs Into Action Alongside Daredevil In Marvel Comics

Some teams in Marvel history last a long time, while others are just temporary alliances that grow out of necessity. The Ultimate Knights came together due to their mutual distaste for Kingpin and their desire to stop his dastardly plans.

Made up of other New York-based heroes, including Daredevil, the team faced off against the notorious Kingpin after his nefarious plans against each were revealed. Each bringing their own style to the table, the Knights were an interesting mix of non-superhumans and superhumans. Considering how many heroes it took to bring him down, it’s no wonder Kingpin is considered one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.

Supreme Sorcerers

On his own, Doctor Strange is an extremely powerful magic user, but some issues are so great that even he needs rescue. The Sorcerer Supremes were founded by Strange when he brought together past and future Sorcerer Supremes to keep the fabric of reality from unraveling.

Featuring characters like Merlin and Sir Isaac Newton, the team of wizards drew inspiration from several areas. As a leader, Strange represented the present, and this mind-bending adventure put his leadership skills to the test. Although they only came together for a short time, the appearance of the Sorcerer Supremes opened the door to exciting adventures in the future or the past.

son of midnight

The Midnight Sons reunite in Marvel Comics.

The Marvel Universe is filled with darker heroes, and the Midnight Sons sought to combine these heroes into one unified force. Initially assembled by Doctor Strange himself, the occult-centric team included the likes of Blade and the monster Man-Thing.

Usually facing demonic forces, the team was disparate but worked well together when they had a common goal. Doctor Strange was responsible for keeping the team together, and that wasn’t always an easy task with so many varied characters. Marvel had done horror-themed team-ups before, but Midnight Sons represented the best of what the darker side of Marvel Comics had to offer.

Infinity Watch

The infinity saga was one of Marvel Comic’s best crossover events, and it spanned the entire comic book universe. Assembled for the unified purpose of defending the Infinity Stones, the Infinity Watch was originally created by Adam Warlock before Doctor Strange later assembled the team.

Aligning Warlock, Captain Marvel, and Star-Lord, the intergalactic team did not fight together in the traditional team sense, but were a close-knit group nonetheless. Understanding the gravity of the stones, Strange was the perfect leader for the group, and his guidance is one of the things that keeps the universe intact.

Illuminati

Marvel Comics Illuminati side by side.

While teams like The Avengers operate in the open, the Illuminati move in the shadows and are one of Marvel’s darkest teams. The group of Marvel’s greatest minds have come together in order to protect the earth by any means necessary. These means usually involved conspiracy and behind-the-scenes string-pulling.

Strange aligned himself with the likes of Professor X and Namor to form the group, and their secret machinations culminated in big events like the world war hulk script. Eventually, they became known, and their semi-villainous plans were thwarted by the Hulk and his Warbound allies. Strange is a fascinating Marvel character because his purely logical brain can sometimes have unintended and dangerous consequences for others.

Defenders

Doctor Strange and the Defenders of Marvel Comics

Usually playing second fiddle to the much more famous Avengers, the Defenders were always a powerful force in the Marvel Universe. Consisting of bolder heroes like the Hulk and Namor, Doctor Strange’s team of personal heroes has seen several roster changes throughout its long history in the comics.

Working outside the box, the Defenders are a much looser organization than the Avengers, but they still pack a punch. As if having the Hulk on the roster wasn’t enough, the team also eventually recruited characters like Beast and Silver Surfer. While they may never be well known as The Avengers, the Defenders offer readers an alternate team to root for that’s just as powerful but not quite as clean.
