I am 50 years old. My father and I have not been particularly close throughout my adult life due to his inability to communicate or relate to me, to others, or to the world in general in any meaningful way. He and my mother separated before I was 2 years old. He was sometimes violent with her. Decades ago, when he suffered from acute mental health issues, there was apparently talk of schizophrenia, but he abandoned conventional mental health care and fled to a monastery instead. Eventually he came back and got a good job and lived his life, but there was always the threat or the presence of his mental illness.
Delusions, psychosis, fixed ideas, persecution complexes, it doesn’t matter: to a certain extent, it has always been there. Sometimes this manifested in rampant verbal abuse and threats of violence, sometimes just an obsessive urge to talk about things that I don’t believe in or that just don’t make sense, but it was always impossible to get over them without conflict of some kind. . He’s also immersed in just about every evil conspiracy theory you can think of. As you can imagine, this made any sort of close relationship impossible, and we went between careful and infrequent contact and complete separation.
As he got older his danger and threat practically disappeared and he had health problems. Now he’s just a sick, frail old man. I helped with his cancer treatment, and he was very grateful and generally a good patient, and we finally got back to our old routine. He can be a very kind, gentle, humorous, and generous person. But now he has had a stroke and can hardly speak, read or write. There is no one else to help him. So I see it more than I have in decades, taking time off and helping out every day with speech therapy, email, banking, shopping, medical correspondence, and video visits. But here’s the thing: he’s bored and wants help navigating to the various websites (which he can’t read anyway) and YouTube channels that push all this ridiculous and hateful nonsense. Anti-masking “plandemia”? Global âglobalistâ takeover? Stop the flight? 9/11 a job inside? The Sandy Hook massacre was rigged? Yes, and then some. He can’t find any of this without my help, and I can’t bring myself to help him here.
Can I refuse to help him access the information he wants but that I find morally objectionable? Or is it just a frail but crazy old man who doesn’t have long to live, so let’s make him happy because it’s harmless and it will make him happy? Name withheld
