Liz Cheney: There’s ‘absolutely a cult of personality around Donald Trump’ in the GOP

Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, said there was “absolutely a cult of personality around Donald Trump” within the Republican Party, in an interview with Robert Costa for “CBS Sunday Morning,” which airs June 5 on CBS and airs on Paramount+.

In the high-profile interview, Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, talks about the GOP, the relationship between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and former President Donald Trump, and upcoming hearings on the attack. of January 6.

REPRESENTING. LIZ CHENEY: “We have too many people now in the Republican Party who don’t take their responsibilities seriously and who have pledged allegiance and loyalty to Donald Trump. I mean, it’s fundamentally antithetical, it’s contrary to everything embrace a cult of personality, and yet that is what so many in my party are doing today.

ROBERT COSTA: “Is the Republican Party a cult of personality?

CHENEY: “I think large segments of it definitely became that.”

COSTA: “A sect?”

CHENEY: “Yeah. I mean, I think there’s absolutely a personality cult around Donald Trump.”
