Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, former Jathedar of Akal Takht, died on Saturday evening.
According to information received, he had a heart attack that evening which turned out to be fatal. He was also the granthi of Sri Harmandar Sahib. He was about 70 years old.
It is a great loss for the Sikh Panth.
Giani Joginder Singh Ji Vedanti was a Gurbani Grammar Master and Gurbani Professor at Punjabi University of Patiala and Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University. He spent many years as a researcher employed by the SGPC to study the Puraatan Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with Bhai Joginder Singh Ji Talwara (of Akhand Kirtani Jatha). His deep knowledge of historical manuscripts was incredible. He had pointed out errors in Gurbani’s printing by the SGPC. However, the SGPC has never noticed and continues to repeat printing errors. He had started to write a Steek (exhibition) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in small volumes, in which he also undertook the task of correcting all printing errors of SGPC using evidence from historical Saroops.
He was a real panthic, accessible and humble person. He was so respectful of Sarbloh Bibek. I remember going to their house and he was so happy and insisted that I cut the apples with my own hands and serve everyone including him. He had so much respect and high esteem for Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji and Akhand Kirtani Jatha. He loved to share his spiritual experiences while attending Akhand Keertan Smaagams.
During his Jathedarship, he banned the RSS and said any Sikh who had social or religious ties with them would be boycotted by the Khalsa Panth. He was a defender of the original Maryada of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and wrote Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s saroop in Lareevar (words joined, according to tradition). Unfortunately, the SGPC continues to print Pad Chhed saroops and fails to protect the legacy of the Sikh gurus.
