The Delhi Police Special Cell has registered an FIR against several Instagram accounts for allegedly encouraging hostility between different religious groups, officials said on Wednesday.
A complaint was filed against the accounts by a certain Manjeet Singh Chugh. He told The Indian Express that he had received screenshots and links to posts from those accounts.
“We have WhatsApp groups with members of the Gurudwara committee and have received several messages. I called the local police on June 7 and told them about the accounts. They posted photos of Hindu gods and Sikh gurus with objectionable and vulgar comments. The owners or the accounts are trying to spread hatred through it. They also published articles on the agricultural protests, ”said Chugh, a businessman.
The accounts have since been blocked.
The local police transferred the case to the special cell and an FIR was subsequently registered against unknown persons.
According to the FIR, the posts are part of a “plot of aliens who are trying to disrupt the environment” of the country.
A senior police officer from the special cell said that a case had been registered against accounts and unknown persons under Article 153A of the IPC (promotion of enmity between different groups for reasons religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.).
“We have already blocked said Instagram accounts and will be asking the social media platform to provide user details soon. We are investigating the matter, ”the officer said.
