Dera Gurmeet leader Ram Rahim gets Z-plus security

Strong points

  • On leave, detainees are allowed to visit their families for a set period
  • Chief Dera was convicted in 2017 in the case of the rape of two disciples
  • He was taken to safety due to the threat of ‘pro-Khalistan’ extremists

Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has received Z-plus security blanket during his 21-day release on furlough from a Haryana prison, officials said on Tuesday. He was given high security cover due to death threats from “pro-Khalistan” extremists, officials added.

Rahim is on 21 days leave from Sunaria prison and is camping in Gurugram. He will receive 10 NSG security guards for mobile security and eight security guards for his residence security. The Haryana government’s recommendation to grant the top layer security blanket to the convicted cult leader follows his request.

Chief Dera was released on furlough on February 7 after the Haryana government concluded that he did not fall under the category of hardline prisoners.

Incidentally, the 21-day holiday came days before the Punjab Assembly elections held on February 20 and it has a large following, especially in Bathinda, Sangrur, Patiala and Muktsar.

The cult leader is currently serving life in prison for the murder of former journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati and the rape of two Dera followers. He was convicted by a CBI Special Court in Panchkula in 2017.

Shortly after his release from Sunaria prison in Rohtak, he was brought to his ashram in Gurugram. Haryana Police have deployed strong security in and around his ashram.
