Cult golf hero John Daly calls Saudi prince a ‘great guy’

John Daly has left some people enraged after calling Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed Bin Salman an “awesome guy”.

Golf cult hero Daly is one of many big-name stars who have expressed an interest in moving from the PGA Tour to rebel league LIV.

The formation of the controversial tournament has drawn strong reactions given that it is financially supported by the Saudi wealth fund.

But unlike some elite golfers who refuse to be drawn in, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlory, Daly admits he couldn’t join the Saudi-funded breakaway competition fast enough.

The two-time major champion even claims he “begged” LIV CEO Greg Norman to sign him up.

“I begged Greg Norman to let me go on the LIV tour,” Daly told Piers Morgan Uncensored.

“I play two to three pro-ams every week on the champions tour and we’re not playing for a lot of money, so I’m almost like, ‘Okay, I’m not getting much out of it. What do we do? ?’

“Listen, sometimes I prefer to play with amateurs rather than pros, but we have to be compensated for that. The LIV Tour offers this to players.

“They (LIV) are playing pro-ams, it’s a big party, they’re playing for a lot of money, and these guys that are on this tour deserve that money. And I think there’s a lot of other guys who deserve this money. Especially this old man!

The 56-year-old also accused LIV Golf’s critics of being hypocritical when discussing the Saudi prince and his record of human rights abuses.

“It’s amazing,” Daly added.

“The politics are so stupid in there. I could talk about Nike, I could talk about other companies. Eight-year-olds make shoes for Nike.

“We don’t want to get into that, do we?” You want to talk about labor law. We are talking about golf. Guys who play golf. It is an international sport.

“The Prince of Saudi Arabia is a great guy and he has given so much money to golfers who deserve it.

“Well, there are some who don’t deserve it because I should be on this tour.”
